SURFchurch exists to be a catalyst of transformation through interactive relational development with Jesus Christ.

Our Story

Would you believe we started out as a local college out reach? It’s true. Way back when this all began Matt & Sherry had (and still have) a huge heart for local college students. They realized that their home was smack dab in the middle of 15 colleges within a 50 mile radius. They added it up to be over 30,000 college students in that area. They set out to love every one of them, one at a time, relationally with the love of Christ. They’re still SURFing toward that goal today, and hope that you will come along for the ride. SURF didn't stop with just young adults though, it grew into a church for all ages.

SURF (Students Ultimate Relational Fusion) was launched July 10, 2009 as a ministry to reach local college students, and young adults with the reality of a relationship of Jesus Christ. Students and young adults from all over the area converged together to start a unique community. Relationships were formed beyond school, and cultural lines. They worshiped together, served together, and began to do life together. It continues to grow relationally, and most importantly a generation is growing in the reality of a relationship with Jesus Christ. Our Sunday night gathering is coming back soon, and will be held September - April for young adults and is now known as "SURFya".

Out of that community the “SURFers” wanted to reach other generations relationally, while at that same time in our brief history there were older generations praying about SURF becoming a church for a year. Led by prayer, and God, SURF held it’s first multi-generational sunday morning service Feb. 27, 2011. A legacy had begun and SURFchurch held it’s official first service as a church on April 24, 2011.

Now years after our humble beginnings SURF Ministries (a 501c3 nonprofit) based in Bristol VA / TN is reaching out through SURFchurch, SURFlive, SURFserve, and SURFya. Through the relationships that have been formed we continue to reach out on the local, state, national, and global levels. We will continue to SURF the seas of life relationally. We will continue to follow the one who walked on land and water, and pursue loving others the way Jesus did.

The Mission

Love God//Love People//Serve the world.

The Vision

SURFchurch exists to be a catalyst of transformation through interactive relational development with Jesus Christ.

The Need

People don’t like church because it’s boring, irrelevant, full of hypocrites, makes them feel like a project instead of a person. Based on past studies of those who avoid Christian churches, one of the driving forces behind such behavior is the painful experiences endured within the local church context. In fact, one study among unchurched adults shows that nearly four out of every ten non-churchgoing Americans said they avoid churches because of negative past experiences in churches or with church people.

The Response

We’re doing life together relationally by loving God, loving people, and serving the world. Without entertaining fluff, or hyper religious clutter we’re keeping the reality of a relationship with Christ authentic.

SURF - what's in a name???

Students - we are all life learners

Ultimate - the best achievable or imaginable of its kind

Relational - the meaning of your life is RELATIONSHIPS. 1ST with God than with others.

Fusion - process or result of joining two or more things together to form a single entity.

The world is waiting to hear an authentic voice, a voice from God - not an echo of what others are doing and saying, but an authentic voice.
